2019 Challenge
This year I have
challenged myself to
paint 1 painting
per week in the
style of one of the
historical Top 100
artists. I am trying to
use the techniques, medium and colours that they used but the goal is to refrain from copying them. The time restriction of 1 week puts limitations on the oil painting and those artists who produced very detailed works

Quiet Beauty
Acrylic on Canvas
Week 34 - Joan Miro (1893 - 1983)
“I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music”
“Little by little, I've reached the stage of using only a small number of forms and colors. It's not the first time that painting has been done with a very narrow range of colors. The frescoes of the tenth century are painted like this. For me, they are magnificent things."
"When I stand in front of a canvas, I never know what I am going to do - and nobody is more surprised than I at what comes out."
Baalbec
Deconstructed
Week 36 - Georges Braque (1882 -1963)
"Art is made to disturb, science reassures."
"Truth exists, only falsehood has to be invented.."
"There is only one valuable thing in art, the thing you cannot explain.."
"To define a thing is to substitute the definition for the thing itself."
Dutchess Waiting

Week 35 - Jasper Johns (1930 - )
“Art is much less important than life, but what a poor life without it.”
"I think that one wants from a painting a sense of life. The final suggestion, the final statement, has to be not a deliberate statement but a helpless statement. It has to be what you can't avoid saying."
"As one gets older one sees many more paths that could be taken. Artists sense within their own work that kind of swelling of possibilities, which may seem a confusion, or a freedom."
First Impressions?
Week 37 - Gustav Klimt(1862-1918)
“Truth is like fire, to tell the truth means to glow and burn."
"I have the gift of neither the spoken nor the written word, especially if I have to say something about myself or my work. Whoever wants to know something about me - as an artist, the only notable thing - ought to look carefully at my pictures and see in them what I am and what I want to do.”
